ESD or Electrostatic Discharge or simply Static Electricity can be harmful in a static sensitive or Cleanroom environment causing losses in production. In order to prevent damage due to static electricity, ionizers are widely in addition to other ESD Control Products. A complete electrostatic management and prevention setup can prevent damages due to electrostatic discharge (ESD). Such complete setup must include comprehensive grounding of all conductors, elimination of insulators, specification and grounding of dissipative materials use of air ionizers.

So, What Does An Air Ionizer Do to Prevent / Eliminate Static Electricity?

Well, air ionizers add equal number of positive and negative ions to the air in order to provide charge carriers that increase the electrical conductivity of the air. Ionizers remove static charges from insulating materials and isolated conductors. Ionizers add additional protection to sensitive electronic devices and electronic components against ESD. It eliminates static charge that wrist straps, bench top ESD mats and even ESD flooring cannot do.

Types of Air Ionizers?

Today, air ionizers are widely used worldwide by manufacturers and servicing industry in the field of electronic components (mainly SMD Electronic Components) and PCB assembly and mobile phone repairing. There are two types of technologies used in air ionizers – Corona Discharge and Nutural Radiation (alpha). Both technologies are widely used and have their own advantages.

Bench Top Ionizer – These are basic ionizers that can be easily placed over the workbench (table) in a small work area. They can protect electronic devices from electrostatic damage that wrist straps, bench top ESD mats and even ESD flooring cannot eliminate.

  • Overhead Ionizer – These ionizers can be hanged / fixed overhead preventing space.
  • Ionizing Air Gun – These are a quick point and shoot way to neutralize static charges and clean the surface using ionized compressed air.

ESD-Safe or Anti–Static chairs are specifically designed and manufactured for use in the electronics and electrical industry and cleanroom environment that are sensitive to static electricity. These ESD Chairs prevent the build up of static electricity by grounding electricity to the earth.

However, it is necessary that the surface area is also properly grounded with ESD Mat. Other Products for ESD Protection must also be used. Just the ESD Chair is not going to provide any protection against static electricity. ESD Mat – Antistatic Mat

An ESD Mat or Antistatic Mat is a specially manufactured rubber or vinyl mat with conductive bottom layer to eliminate static electricity. These antistatic mat can be layed on floor or table top. These mats are specially manufactured with controlled low resistance.

These ESD Mats need to be grounded with the help of thin metal sheet to be layed on all four sides of the mat and then grounded using grounding coil. A resistor can also be used to slow down the discharge rate. An antistatic insulating mat without the copper layer below it would not provide any grounding.

Resistance of these ESD Mat is typically between 105 to 108 ohms between points on the mat and to ground. By using rivets on the antistatic mat, you can also connect an antistatic wrist strap to it.

Our ESD Rubber Mats are made of two layers of 2mm thickness. The top layer is static dissipative rubber and the bottom layer is black conductive layer. Surface resistivity of the both the layers is between105 to 108 ohms. This ESD Rubber mat also offer excellent resistance against oil, grease, flux, IPA and most common solvent. These ESD Rubber Mats are also light as compared to other single layer and three layer mats.
